Robert Johnston has degrees in architecture, urban planning, and resource management and is an Emeritus Professor in the Department of Environmental Science and Policy at the University of California, Davis. Professor Johnston taught courses in environmental planning, land use controls, environmental impact assessment, and urban modeling prior to retirement. He was a planning consultant before joining UC Davis in 1971.

Professor Johnston's main research is on urban transportation planning. His major interests lie in land use plan implementation, open space and terrestrial habitat protection, transportation and land use modeling, and regional planning support systems. Currently, he is working on the California PECAS Model, the California Statewide Travel Model and the UPlan Model. Robert's specialties include land use and transportation modeling/ planning, plan evaluation, indicators, and impact assessment.
